Industrial Coatings.

Protection That Performs Under Pressure.

Industrial Coatings

Surface protection is only as good as the system behind it.

Think Industrial Services applies protective, decorative and fire-protection coatings to commercial and industrial structures using rope access, scaffolding and MEWP whichever method keeps your programme moving and your quality standards intact.

Our operatives are trained and experienced in multi-coat application systems across corrosivity categories from C3 to C5, including intumescent fire protection to ETAG 018 and ASFP standards. We work directly from system specifications or alongside your project engineer to select and apply the right product for the exposure and the budget.

What We Offer

We apply protective and fire protection coatings to structural steelwork, plant and building fabric across commercial and industrial environments.

Anti-Corrosion Coatings

We apply a full range of anti-corrosion coating systems including epoxy, polyurethane and zinc-based primers and topcoats to structural steelwork and building fabric. Every system is selected and applied to suit the specific corrosivity environment and substrate condition, ensuring long-term protection that meets the performance requirements of the project and the expectations of the asset owner.

Intumescent Fire Protection

We apply thin and thick film intumescent coatings to structural steelwork in accordance with project fire engineering requirements and manufacturer specifications. Our operatives are trained and experienced in intumescent application, ensuring correct dry film thickness is achieved across all sections and that the finished installation meets the required fire resistance period with full supporting documentation.

Surface Preparation

Correct surface preparation is the foundation of any successful coating system. We carry out abrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2.5 and mechanical preparation to St 3, removing mill scale, rust, existing coatings and contamination to create the surface profile and cleanliness level required for coating adhesion. All preparation work is carried out in accordance with ISO 8501 standards and inspected before any coating is applied.

Passive Fire Protection Coatings

We install passive fire protection coating systems in compliance with ETAG 018 Part 2, providing certified protection to structural elements in commercial and industrial buildings. Works are carried out by trained operatives to approved system specifications, with full application records, dry film thickness readings and third-party certification provided at handover to support building control sign-off and regulatory compliance.

Decorative & Finish Coatings

Beyond protection, the finish matters. We apply decorative and finish coatings to commercial and industrial buildings, providing a high-quality result that meets both the aesthetic requirements of the project and the durability demands of the environment. From feature steelwork to full building exteriors, our teams deliver a consistent, professional finish at any height and in any access condition.

Protective Coatings

Tanks, vessels and process plant present some of the most demanding coating environments, where failure can have serious operational and safety consequences. We apply specialist protective coating systems to all types of plant and containment structures, working to the appropriate industry standards and access requirements to ensure full coverage, correct film build and long-term performance in aggressive chemical and environmental conditions.

Overcoat & Repair Works

Coating systems degrade over time and localised damage can accelerate corrosion if left unaddressed. We carry out targeted touch-in, overcoat and repair works to extend the life of existing coating systems without the cost of full reapplication. Works are carried out with compatible products and correct surface preparation to ensure new coatings bond properly and perform in line with the existing system.

Coatings to Corrosive Environments

High corrosivity environments demand coating systems and application standards that go beyond the norm. We are experienced in specifying and applying coatings to C4 and C5 environments including coastal, offshore-adjacent and heavily industrial structures, where salt, humidity and chemical exposure place exceptional demands on coating performance. Systems are selected, applied and inspected to ISO 12944 requirements, with full documentation provided to give asset owners confidence in the long-term protection of their structures.

F.A.Q’s

The correct coating system depends on several factors including the substrate type and condition, the corrosivity category of the environment, the required design life and any specific performance requirements such as fire protection or chemical resistance. We assess each project individually, taking into account the relevant ISO 12944 corrosivity classification and the access conditions, before recommending a system that delivers the required performance at the right cost. Where a project specification already exists, we work to it and if we have concerns about suitability, we’ll raise them before works begin.

Intumescent coatings are a form of passive fire protection. When exposed to heat, the coating expands to form an insulating char layer around the steel, slowing the rate at which the steelwork heats up and maintaining structural integrity for a defined fire resistance period. Passive fire protection is the broader term covering all systems, including boards, sprays and coatings that protect structures without requiring activation or intervention. We specialise in the coating-based approach, which is widely used on exposed structural steelwork where aesthetics and access make boards or sprays impractical.

No matter how good the coating system, it will fail prematurely if the surface beneath it is not properly prepared. Contamination, rust, mill scale and inadequate surface profile all prevent coatings from bonding correctly, leading to adhesion failure, corrosion undercut and early breakdown. Blast cleaning to Sa 2.5 removes these issues and creates the angular surface profile that allows coatings to key properly into the substrate. We inspect all prepared surfaces before coating begins to ensure the standard required has been achieved.

Yes. We routinely carry out coating works in challenging access conditions, including at height using rope access or scaffold and in confined spaces such as tanks and vessels. Our operatives hold the relevant working at height and confined space training, and all works are planned with full RAMS, COSHH assessments and permit-to-work documentation in place before any operative enters a restricted or elevated work environment.
