Intumescent Coatings.

Fire Protection That Buys Time.

Intumescent Coatings

Steel needs protecting before the fire, not after.

Think Industrial Services applies thin and thick film intumescent coatings to structural steel across commercial and industrial buildings. In a fire the coating swells into an insulating char that slows how fast the steel heats. That holds the structure up for a set rating, from 30 to 120 minutes.

We work to the fire engineer’s schedule and the manufacturer’s spec, on site or off site. Every section gets the right dry film thickness, measured and recorded as we go. You get full application records and third-party certification at handover, ready for building control.

What We Offer

We protect structural steel with certified intumescent systems, on site or in the shop, to the project’s fire engineering.

Thin Film Intumescent

Thin film systems suit most commercial and industrial buildings. They give a clean, decorative finish on exposed steel while delivering the rated protection. We apply them to the fire engineer’s schedule, section by section.

Thick Film Intumescent

Harsher settings need a tougher system. Thick film epoxy intumescents protect steel in petrochemical, offshore-adjacent and hydrocarbon fire environments. We spec and apply them where the fire risk demands more than thin film.

On-Site Application

We apply intumescent coatings to steel that’s already erected. Our teams work around the structure and the other trades, at height where needed. Access by rope or MEWP keeps the job moving.

Surface Preparation & Priming

A fire coating only performs on a properly prepared surface. We prepare and prime the steel to the system spec before any intumescent goes on. That’s what makes the coating bond and the rating hold.

Dry Film Thickness Control

Fire ratings live or die on film thickness. We measure dry film thickness across every section and record it as we work. No guesswork, no gaps, just the protection the design calls for.

Certification & Documentation

Building control needs proof, not promises. We provide full application records, DFT readings and third-party certification at handover. Sign-off is straightforward because the paperwork is already there.

Topcoats & Finishes

Intumescent steel can still look the part. We apply decorative topcoats in the colour and finish the project calls for. The steel stays protected and on brief.

F.A.Q’s

Both protect steel in a fire, but in different ways. Boards are fixed around the steel; intumescent is sprayed or rolled on and swells in the heat. Coatings give a cleaner finish on exposed steel and suit complex sections that boards struggle to fit.

We apply systems rated from 30 to 120 minutes. The rating comes from the steel section, the system and the dry film thickness. We work to the fire engineer’s schedule to hit the rating on every member.

Yes. We coat erected steel on site, working at height where needed by rope access or MEWP. We can also coat off site in the shop, whichever suits your programme.

Full application records, dry film thickness readings and third-party certification, all handed over at completion. The evidence building control needs is ready before they ask for it.
